Definition
Kosher refers to foods that meet the dietary requirements outlined in Jewish law (kashrut). These laws specify which foods are permitted, how they must be prepared, supervised, and handled.
Kosher Status at Western University
Western University’s Hospitality Services does not operate a Kosher kitchen, nor do we have Kosher certification. Food prepared in our environments—even with careful ingredient selection—cannot be considered Kosher because facilities are shared, equipment is not segregated, and there is no kashrut supervision.
Pre-packaged, Special-Order, and Passover Meals
Although we do not have a Kosher kitchen, we offer solutions for observing students:
- Pre-packaged Meals: Sealed and manufacturer-certified Kosher meals are available throughout the year to students in residence. They maintain Kosher status while sealed in their original packaging. We assist with heating these safely.
- Passover: Western offers Kosher for Passover meals across all eight residence dining halls and designated campus locations.
- How to order: Contact nutritionservices@uwo.ca or speak with your residence chef/manager to coordinate access.
Pareve Foods and Navigating the Dining Halls
Pareve (parve) refers to foods containing neither meat nor dairy (e.g., fruits, vegetables, grains, eggs, fish with fins/scales).
- Note on Pareve: While a food may be pareve by ingredient, it cannot be considered Kosher if prepared in our non‑Kosher kitchens due to cross-contact risks.
- Common Practices: Many Kosher-observant students navigate dining by choosing pareve-by-ingredient foods, following a vegetarian/vegan diet, and pairing residence dining with pre-packaged sealed Kosher meals.
Off-Campus Kosher Options
- Most major grocery retailers carry a range of Kosher-certified packaged products.
- An independently operated Kosher kitchen near campus provides prepared meals. Students can explore independently operated Kosher kitchens near Western's campus. Questions? Reach out to the Registered Dietitian for guidance on off-campus resources.
