Halal is an Arabic term in Islam which means permissible. The opposite is Haram (prohibited or unlawful). Halal is the dietary standard for Muslims.

Standards and Guidelines

  • It is a cheese where all listed ingredients are halal.
  • Its chemical/synthetic source is halal.
  • Animal-based ingredients are extracted from a dhabihah animal meeting HMA standards.
  • It is not manufactured using non-halal substances.

Ingredients are considered Haram if they contain:

  • Meat not slaughtered by a Muslim or People of the Book in accordance with Mosaic Law, or meat from carnivorous animals.
  • Pork and pork-derived products (i.e., bacon, ham, lard, gelatin, pepsin).
  • Cheese with pork-derived enzymes/rennet.
  • Baked goods containing pork lard.
  • Alcohol or alcoholic by-products (wine, beer, liquor, even in cooking).
  • Flowing blood and its derivatives.
  • Ingredients from unlawful sources (i.e., enzymes, lecithin, L-cysteine, etc.).

Please note: Vegan and vegetarian offerings will also be labeled Halal if they meet Halal standards, provided they do not contain alcohol or alcohol-derived ingredients

Preparation and Prevention of Cross-Contamination

Staff follow protocols to support the reasonable preparation of Halal meals in a shared-use setting:

  • Ingredient verification: Ensuring no pork, alcohol, non-Halal meat, or uncertified animal-based ingredients are present.
  • Hand hygiene & Glove protocol: Hands are washed and gloves changed between handling Halal and non-Halal items.
  • Utensil separation & Surface cleaning: Separate utensils are used. If not possible, tools and surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized between non-Halal and Halal prep.
  • Cookware use: Separate pans/griddles are used whenever possible.
